Closing the Teach For America Blogging Gap

Coast-to-Coast Fierce Womyn Warrior

Hello blog readers!

A couple of nights ago a good friend of mine begged me to keep a blog about my Teach for America experience.  So I decided to get the jump on it!  I swear, this is not a tactic to further procrastinate from finishing papers.

So right now I am a undergraduate at the University of California, Davis.  In 35 days I will be a graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science-Public Service and Women’s Studies, and a minor in Writing.  I can honestly say that these past four years at UC Davis have been the best of my life so far.  There are so many things that I will miss: never having to walk anywhere on campus alone, how seriously we take ourselves in ASUCD, hog roasts and riding my bike, the smell of cow poo in the summer time…. ok, maybe not that last one.  But I am Aggie Pride.  And I’m so excited to tell my future students all about how they should go to UC Davis.

I have already received my placement.  I feel like my luck with Teach for America has been incredible.  I applied at the very first deadline, found out I was offered a corps member position in New York City before Thanksgiving, interviewed at one charter school, and just a week ago was hired to teach first grade at said school.  It’s been totally surreal.  But I have a feeling like all these pieces are coming together in such a wonderful way because it’s fate and I’m about to embark upon the next greatest chapter of my life.

At first I was quite nervous to pick up and move across the country.  But I am getting ready.  In fact, I am getting restless.  There are a lot of things that still need to be figured out (the apartment situation with my bestie from high school, does anyone know how you’re supposed to find an apartment in Brooklyn?  Help a country girl out!).  But I am excited.  Life is all about those BOLD choices, you know?

I’m struggling to finish the pre-institute reading AND my classes.  But it’s incredibly interesting.  I’m so ethusiastic about everything I have to learn about teaching, it doesn’t even feel like work.

Thank you to everyone who read this first entry!  For all my UC Davis folks, I really hope you’re looking forward to reading ALL about my adventures!!!
